As part of ReEarth Club, BRUR’s School Awareness Program, I had the opportunity to conduct an environmental awareness session with fifth-grade students at Khorda Tampat Sardarpara Primary School, Rangpur, ahead of World Environment Day 2025.
The session focused on a simple but important question: Why is plastic a threat to our planet?
We discussed how plastic pollution affects our surroundings, including soil, water, wildlife and ecosystems. Using simple and age-appropriate examples, I tried to help the students understand how everyday plastic use can create long-term environmental problems.
We also talked about what we can do as individuals to reduce plastic pollution. The students were encouraged to develop simple eco-friendly habits such as reducing unnecessary plastic use, reusing items whenever possible and choosing more sustainable alternatives.
To make the session engaging for the students, we incorporated stories, interactive discussions and a quiz competition. The combination of learning and participation created an energetic and enjoyable environment for environmental education.
For me, the session was a reminder that environmental awareness can begin at a very young age. When children understand the consequences of everyday choices, they can become thoughtful participants in protecting their environment.
The programme was originally planned around World Environment Day. Since the school would remain closed during the Eid-ul-Azha holidays, the event was held earlier on May 25, 2025.
